New File System Features

Several new file system features were introduced at WWDC 2024 across different sessions:

1. Finder Enhancements:

   • Improved Folder Management and Previews: Finder now better manages folders and renders previews of large USD scenes without affecting system performance. This includes the ability to load pre-rendered asset preview thumbnails, making it faster to browse through directories with large files (What’s new in USD and MaterialX).
   • Convert to USDZ: A new "Convert to USDZ" action is available in the Shortcuts app, and the Archive Utility now extracts USDZ files (What’s new in USD and MaterialX).

2. Disk Management Configuration:

   • IT Admin Controls: A new disk management configuration allows IT admins to manage external and network storage. They can choose whether external or network storage is allowed or disallowed altogether, or even limit mounting to read-only volumes. This replaces the previously deprecated media management payload (What’s new in device management).

3. Save Panel Enhancements:

   • Standard File Format Picker: In macOS Sequoia, there's now a standard file format picker in the save panel, making it easier to select the format of the file you'd like to save without creating a custom accessory view (What’s new in AppKit).

These features collectively enhance the file system's usability, security, and performance, making it easier for both end-users and IT administrators to manage files and storage on macOS.
