What's New in Device Management

Apple introduced several new features and updates in device management at WWDC 2024. Here are the key highlights:

1. Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager:

   • Enhanced domain capture to simplify the deployment of managed Apple accounts.
   • New activation lock features to recover organization devices with activation lock inadvertently left on.
   • Automated device enrollment now includes Apple Vision Pro, allowing IT teams to enroll these devices into MDM within the setup assistant.

2. Software Update Controls:

   • New software update settings configuration replaces all legacy MDM software update management commands, profiles, and restrictions.
   • Phased rollout of software updates starting from the first beta.
   • Ability to manage and enable Safari extensions directly from MDM.

3. VisionOS 2.0:

   • Expanded management capabilities for Apple Vision Pro with new configurations, payloads, and MDM commands.
   • Support for most MDM payloads, configurations, and commands, making managing Vision Pro as easy as managing an iPhone or iPad.

4. iOS and iPadOS 18:

   • Special exception for MDM enrollment on newly set up devices without causing a security delay for the first 3 hours after stolen device protection is enabled.
   • Installing proprietary in-house apps using a new team identity will require a restart.

5. Disk Management Configuration:

   • New configuration allows IT admins to manage external and network storage, including options to disallow or limit mounting to read-only volumes.

6. Platform Single Sign-On (SSO):

   • Expanded capabilities for platform SSO, allowing developers to build SSO extensions that extend to the macOS login window.
   • Identity provider authentication can now unlock FileVault, and login policies can require IDP authentication across FileVault login window and lock screen.

7. Education Enhancements:

   • Multi-app mode for iPad, including secondary apps like notepads, spreadsheets, assistive apps, coding apps, and a new calculator app.
   • Configuration for assessment mode and MDM to customize the new calculator app for classrooms and standardized exams.
