At WWDC, Apple introduced several new features and updates for watchOS, particularly in watchOS 26 and watchOS 11.
watchOS 26
- Design System: watchOS 26 features a new design system with updates to materials and controls, including a fresh look with Liquid Glass. This design is applied throughout the OS, affecting app icons, system spaces like the Watch face, and the Control Center.
- System Architecture: The new system architecture supports ARM64, which is used by Apple Watch Series 9 and later, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2.
- Widgets and Controls: Widgets can now receive push updates using APNs, and controls can be placed in the Control Center and Smart Stack. This allows for quick actions without opening the app.
- MapKit Enhancements: New features for MapKit include searching for nearby points of interest and getting routes using different transport types, which can be displayed as overlays on a map with SwiftUI.
watchOS 11
- Live Activities: iOS live activities are now available on Apple Watch, providing a glanceable way to track events or tasks.
- Widgets: The Smart Stack can now automatically display widgets when they are most relevant, using context clues provided by the app.
- Health and Fitness: Enhancements in HealthKit and WorkoutKit include new APIs for mood or emotion data and custom workout types with distance and time goals.
- Interactivity: Double tap functionality allows for new ways to navigate and take action within apps or widgets.
